Merrell’s Top Holiday Packing Tips

Vacations are just around the corner – after what feels like a long couple of years of cancelled plans and cancelled trips – weekend breaks and extended holidays are back. What it also means, is making sure you can still pack as efficiently as you did before.

How do you streamline that packing process without the stress of having oversized luggage when you get to the airport? Our team have put together our guide on how to pack for that upcoming break.

  1. Make a checklist of everything you need – and assess it carefully. There’s maybe lots of things you don’t need and you’re just being over cautious.
  2. Roll up your clothes. You’ll be surprised how much space this saves compared to folding.
  3. Packing an extra pair of shoes or two? Use the extra space to pop in rolled up pairs of socks.
  4. Short trip? Decant your liquids into smaller bottles. Grab yourself reusable travel sized bottles and pour shampoo, conditioner and body wash into these.
  5. Planning a long trip? Buy your full size bottles when you get there. Items like shampoo can be picked up in most convenience stores or chemists – save the luggage weight.
  6. Label and secure your luggage. Make sure you have a luggage label on your backpack in case it’s lost in transit and secure your luggage and belongings with a proper lock or padlock. Just don’t forget that combination or lose the key!
  7. Leave some free space. You’re going to find plenty of souvenirs and gifts on your travels, so don’t forget to leave some room.
  8. Use the right kind of bag for the holiday you’re going on. Doing some interrailing around Europe – take a large backpack. Having a resort hotel holiday? Use that big suitcase.  Don’t forget something for getting from A to B.

A perfect addition to your luggage for exploring small cities, is our Trailhead 15L backpack. It has plenty of pockets and compartments for keeping your belongings safe when you’re out and about.

9. Pack transitional items –

Long shirts that can be worn as dresses and sneakers that can double up as all day shoes are a winner in our books. Our Women’s Cloud Moc Vent casual sneaker makes an ideal day to dinner shoe for city breaks.

10. Take a capsule wardrobe (if you can)

Pick 5-6 key items that can all mix and match. We recommend 3 T-shirts, 1 Pair Of Trousers, Shirt, shorts and a dress. This will keep your packing efficient and your suitcase light. Stay neutral to keep those outfits streamlined – greys, whites and beiges match pretty much any colour – if you like, coordinate with a bright scarf to add a pop of colour.

Our lightweight women’s Tencel Short Sleeved T-shirt comes in a variety of colours and makes for a perfect addition to a capsule wardrobe when out traveling. It folds small, and the Tencel technology means it is resistant to creases, so it’s great for throwing on during travels.

11. Wear in your shoes.

It’s important to wear in your holiday hiking shoes as soon as you can. Don’t wait to wear them until your trip or you may find yourself with shoes that rub, and even some blisters. Wear them around the house with thick socks before you go.

One of our comfiest shoes yet, the MQM Flex 2 combines both a trail runner and hiking shoe for maximum cushioning and comfort.
