The shoes are important, but what else do you need?

If you’re heading into nature, whether it’s a hike or trail run, you’ll probably be away from areas that provide food and water. If you’re heading out on a longer run, pack a water bottle or some hydration packs and snacks into a lightweight running backpack. Also include a small first aid kit just in case things don’t go to plan.

It’s not all about the shoes, for a comfortable run it’s important to wear the right training attire to make sure you are comfortable in any weather. Shorts and running tops should be made with lightweight materials that draw the sweat away from your body. The Trail Run SS Tee is made for trail running, letting the air flow through the layers during your runs.

To keep your shoes in order, check out our shoe care accessories and grab some Rain and Stain Waterproofer for your shoes to protect them from water dirt and stains.

Safety tips for trail running

When running by yourself, make sure to let somebody know the trails and route you plan on running before you take your first strides. Down Under we don’t have any tigers to look out for, however there are still many spiders, snakes and bugs – so keep your phone close in case you have a fall or cop a bite from one of our reptilian friends.

Make sure to have a good level of hydration before you start your run and wear a hat and sunscreen even when the weather is cloudy.

Selecting the right trails

Beginners should select tacks with well-marked signs and tracks that are well maintained. Many tracks are rated by their distance, difficulty and inclines, so make sure you select a trail that matches the beginner’s skill and fitness levels. Get online and search for some info about trails in your area or get some advice from a running group.

Running techniques change on the trails

Trail running uses are few different techniques that those used in road running. With unpredictable tracks and terrain, you’ll need to practice better awareness of the running trail surface and your surroundings. When running up incline, shorten your stride, leaning forward slightly while doing your best to keep a constant pace to maintain some energy in the tank.

When running down an incline, resist the urge to break your stride too much as this will cause stress on the knee, ankle and hip joints over time. Keep a relaxed posture and let gravity do the work as begin your decent. The environment around you may look stunning, but make sure to maintain a good level of concentration on your footing, and things like branches that hang from above. Keep your eyes forward and down to observe oncoming terrain while making sure to keep your balance.

The unwritten rules

Stay on marked trails to protect the fauna and nature, and make sure to leave things as they were by taking home any rubbish you have. Make sure to stick to the left of the paths should you have others coming your way and just use some plain common sense should you need to stop and let others through.
